About Us

Today we’d like to introduce you to Timisha Thirkield.

Timisha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My name is Timisha Thirkield and I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. At The Age Of 25, I Founded Mimi’s Designz Company in 2016, two months before my 26th birthday. I stepped away from my current dream job of teaching due to lack of interest. I decided to step out on faith and take up the career of my other dream job which was graphic designing and animation. I graduated from Atlanta Technical in 2014, and I wrote a book for my health and safety children class called “BJ Learns To Make A Fruit Pie” and I illustrated the entire book on Microsoft Word and I knew then that I wanted to take up the graphic and designing down the road. I taught childcare for about six years, and I lost my passion and interest for it; so while in working at Atlanta Technical College I enrolled back and took up Design and Media Production and I learned how to use Adobe Creative Cloud software (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro etc), I fell in love with graphic designing and I quit my full time job as a daycare teacher and went to school full time learning the basics of how to use the Adobe software program. While I was unemployed, I thought how I could make money but didn’t want to go back and work a 9-5; so I decided I wanted to open up my own graphic design company. My husband Alex bought me my first computer with $0 to my name and Mimi’s Designz Company was born. I promoted non-stop every single day, and I didn’t receive my first client till about a month into launching my business, then my business took off since.

I worked with many clients all over the world, such as Georgia, Alabama, New York, North and South Carolina and my favorite place I can’t wait to visit the Bahamas. In 2018 business became very slow, so I decided to go back into the working field, and I started working at the Atlanta Falcons Mercedes Benz Stadium, and I promoted my business there. Then in 2018, I found out I was pregnant and business started picking up and it became very stressful trying to maintain a part time job and business. Unfortunately, I had a miscarriage, and I went into a deep depression. I didn’t want to do anything, and I wanted to shut down my business, and I lost my best friend who was murdered within the same year. My friends and family brought me out my slump, and I was more determined than ever. I was blessed again in 2019 to become a mom, but unfortunately, I gave birth to my beautiful baby boy March 16, 2019 at 18 weeks pregnant, a day after my birthday March 15, and the pain I felt was unbearable. I thought that God hated me. He didn’t want me to become a mom, so I never fully accepted the passing of my son and I dedicated my new logo design to my son and my family. On the computer on my logo it says “March 16, 2019 A Prince Was Born R.I.P Mommy’s Angel” and on my Macbook I’m holding has my heart which is my mom, my other half which is my twin sister and my Soulmate which is my husband who are very close to my heart; without them I don’t think I would have ever made it this far in my life. January 2020, my business has flourished more than I can ever imagine I’ve become the new marketing/social media manager for Kay Slay Hair in South Carolina. And Now VoyageAtl has blessed me with a great opportunity to tell my story, and I’ve only been in business for three years and its a true blessing.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Mimi’s Designz Company hasn’t been all peaches and cream. The main obstacles I’ve encountered in business is maintaining a part-time job and running your own business. I’ve wanted to commit suicide many times because my job and my business was either too slow or too much for me to handle. But my friends, family and clients told me not to give up. I’m way too talented and God didn’t bring me this far to give up. Another challenge I faced was deadlines, turnaround and communication within my business. Sometimes, I would overbook myself, I would fall behind on communicating with my clients, and I’ve missed a couple deadlines that were given to me. My clients are so amazing and understanding they didn’t mind and they continued to work with me. Ms.Denise, the owner of "Sthylz By Denise" located in Alabama, has been my client for about 2 years now. The pricing was another challenge I also faced in my business. I charged from the beginning, and as my business grew, so did my clients. Some said I was too expensive; others said my work was worth the price I was giving. So I offered branding packages for clients to choose from because no matter how big or small your order is, I take pride in each and every one I receive.

Please tell us about the business.
Mimi’s Designz Company is a graphic design business. I specialize in logos, business cards, Flyers, banners & invitations. Anything graphic you name it I can do it, and if I can’t I teach myself how to do, then I offer the service to my clients. I am best known for my logos, especially my cartoon logos, where I would take a photo of someone and turn them into a logo using Adobe Illustrator. I am most proud of Mimi’s Designz Company and those who supported me, which were my family, friends but mostly my clients. My clients have shown me so much love from all over the world, not just my hometown Georgia. Being a young female in a dominantly male profession, I was always bashed on doing graphic designing because I was considered too girly, but I can bring any look to life, whether it was for a male or female. My clients showed me I could do anything I put my mind too, and my male clients have been supportive as well. Without my clients, there wouldn’t be a Mimi’s Designz Company. What sets me apart from others is that my clients love my work so much they allow me to design whatever I like for their business and the ability to be myself has made me happy, and I can express myself through my client’s work.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I plan on having my own building for Mimi’s Designz Company so I can meet more of my clients in person. I plan on expanding and offering bigger and better services to my clients. I want to work with my favorite actress Taraji P. Henson. I love and adore her. She is the reason why I started my business because she was in her 30s when she became an actress and she said don’t allow someone to tell you that you can’t be somebody due to your age or gender and I’ve carried that speech with me every single day.
